What is the difference between ceramic and porcelain tiles?

Ceramic and Porcelain tiles are both made from clay and fired in a kiln. Porcelain is made from more refined clay and is fired at a higher temperature making it much more dense than ceramic. Ceramic tiles are more porous and will absorb more moisture than porcelain tiles. For this reason, we do not recommend ceramic tiles for outdoor use, especially in freeze-thaw climates.
